Welcome to my occasional round-up of witty writing from virtual worlds. This week features Trombone Champ, Frog Detective, and Ace Attorney.

Warning: may contain spoilers

1) Brassy Lies | Trombone Champ

Trombone Champ’s loading screen takes the opportunity to share some ‘facts’ about trombones. The facts slide toward the dubious end of the scale.

A black loading screen from the game Trombone Champ. White text says: “It takes one-thousand workers a full year to produce a single trombone.”
Now imagine how long it would take to produce a tuba. Source: Trombone Champ, Holy Wow Studios (author’s screenshot)

2) Drowned Sorrows | Sludge Life

This guy says he comes up here to deal with his depression. Shockingly, it doesn’t seem to be working.

A screenshot from the game Sludge Life. The art is cartoon style. The perspective is looking down from the top of a construction site at the arm of a crane. A red-head, white man is hanging precariously from the arm. He says: “and I’m still sadder than a Goldfish in a Shot Glass.”

3) High Steaks | The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles

This is why you’re told to never wordplay with your food.

A screenshot from the game Ace Attorney. In the middle of the screen is a half-eaten steak on a plate. The steak has been lifted slightly to reveal a gold coing sitting in the juice. The characters Ryunosuke and Susato stand either side, facing the camera. Susato says: “I’ve heard of pearls before swine, but I’ve never heard of bullion in bouillon!”
The joke’s medium-rare, at best. Source: The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, Capcom (author’s screenshot)

4) Hat Tip | Frog Detective 3: Corruption at Cowboy County

Dusty applies some thought-provoking philosophy to the case of the missing hats.

The Frog Detecive stands in front of Dusty, a koala in a blue suit, in a western setting. Dusty says: “We spend so much time focused on how to find the missing hats, and no time considering why we had them in the first place.”

5) Feline Myself | Baldur’s Gate 3

The cats of Faerûn ooze class and confidence. Kira, in particular, sits on a tall throne of self-esteem.

A screenshot from the game Baldur’s Gate 3. A brown cat with blue eyes called Kira is sat on a plush, royal-red carpet. She says: “It’s your lucky day, I am receiving compliments a this time, and you are most welcome to make an offering.”
All hail Queen Kira. Source: Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian Studios (author’s screenshot)
